They’re Inseparable—but Only When They Exercise

Platonic workout partners can play a key role in training when spouses have other interests

Kim Austin and Mark Abair bicker like an old married couple. She chides him for always starting out too fast at races. On long runs, she rolls her eyes when he insists on finding a port-a-potty.

Ms. Austin is married, but not to Mr. Abair. Instead, he serves as what hard-core exercisers call a workout husband—the exercise equivalent of a work spouse. They run together, but their relationship is strictly platonic.
